When Should a Man Get Gynecomastia Surgery?

Posted October 16, 2020 in Gynecomastia

2 Minute Read:

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a procedure that removes glandular tissue and/or fat from the breast, resulting in a more defined, masculine chest contour. In extreme cases of gynecomastia, excess skin will need to be removed. Additionally, in some cases, breast expansion can cause the areola to increase in size. Gynecomastia can reduce the size of the areola and reposition the nipple.

Types of Gynecomastia

There are two classifications of gynecomastia: pathologic or physiologic. The pathologic type involves an imbalance in the ratio of estrogen and androgen in the body or a defect in androgen tissue receptors.

The physiologic type occurs during puberty and often regresses spontaneously. Usually, these cases resolve themselves within a few years. However, if they persist past adolescence, then hormones might be the root problem.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Some of the common causes of gynecomastia include:

  • Aging
  • Puberty
  • Weight gain
  • Testicular hypofunction
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Medications
  • Tumors
  • Chronic disease
  • Genetics
  • Drug use (i.e., anabolic steroids)

In many cases, the exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown.

When Should a Man Consider Gynecomastia Surgery?

If occurring during puberty, the individual is recommended to wait until post-adolescence before considering gynecomastia surgery. If the condition persists into adulthood, then surgery is a viable option. This also ensures breast development is complete.

Candidates should consider gynecomastia surgery if they feel unhappy with their appearance or their gynecomastia causes pain and tenderness. Sometimes there is a painful lump under the nipple. Additionally, if the gynecomastia has resulted in differently-sized breasts, surgery may be recommended to deal with feelings of breast-related insecurity.

Ultimately, the longer a patient waits, the more damage the condition may have on their self-esteem. Gynecomastia surgery is an easy solution that can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life.

While complications can occur in any surgery, gynecomastia is a safe and straightforward procedure. To better understand if you are the right candidate for this procedure, book a consultation with a plastic surgeon.
