If you are often told that you look tired or uninterested in conversation when you’re wide awake and paying attention, take a close look at your eyes.
If you see droopy eyelids or undereye bags that persist, even when you are well-rested, this may be the reason, and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) might be the solution.
Dr. Todd Koch offers a wide range of body, breast, and face procedures, including eyelid surgery in Buffalo, New York, to help women achieve the cosmetic results they desire safely and effectively.
What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is suitable for both men and women with sagging, puffy, or wrinkled skin around their eyes. It is often the first plastic surgery procedure many individuals undergo due to the eyes often aging faster than the rest of the face.
Because a facelift procedure only treats the lower and mid-face, eyelid surgery is commonly added for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
You can expect the following results from a blepharoplasty performed by Dr. Koch:
- Increased confidence
- A more rested and alert appearance
- Tighter skin above and below the eyes
- Smoother, younger-looking eyes
- Elimination of excess skin that droops over the top of the eyes
- Improved range of eyesight if loose eyelid skin had previously interfered with vision
Friends and loved ones will notice your enhanced aesthetic, often without realizing that you had surgery.
What Is Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is the surgical procedure performed to improve the appearance of the eyelids by removing excess skin while recontouring the eyelids. Eyelid surgery can also improve peripheral vision in individuals with extremely droopy upper eyelids.
Whether your goal is to look younger and more engaged, or you are experiencing problems with vision due to eyelid ptosis (sagging), this surgery can provide significant improvement.
How Is Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Blepharoplasty is designed to remove excess skin and fatty deposits from the upper and lower eyelids to reveal more youthful-looking eyes. In many cases, this procedure can also reduce or eliminate the appearance of dark undereye circles.
During your consultation with Dr. Koch, you will share the concerns you have about your eyes and the goals you want to achieve. After listening carefully and obtaining a complete medical history, he will create a custom treatment plan to deliver your desired results.
This procedure can be performed on the upper or lower eyelids, and both may be treated when appropriate.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to return to the comfort of your own home right after surgery.
Typically, a local anesthetic is administered after you have been gently sedated with intravenous medication. The necessary incisions are made in the natural upper eyelid crease or under the lower eyelashes, which are easily concealed. However, when only fat needs to be removed, an incision is made inside the lower eyelid.
The surgery lasts around two hours when treating both sets of eyelids. Treating only the upper or lower eyelids takes less time.
What Can I Expect During My Eyelid Surgery Recovery?
It usually takes about four weeks to recover fully from eyelid surgery, and you can expect to experience the following:
Immediately After
You may be groggy or nauseous due to the anesthesia used during surgery. If you have a history of nausea after surgery, alert Dr. Koch so he can have medication ready to treat this reaction.
Your eyes might be warm, sore, or tight immediately following surgery, and you may experience some other mild discomfort that can be managed with prescribed medication.
Many patients report blurred vision and, depending on the exact techniques used, may need to wear protective bandages or gauze over the eyes.
Itchiness at the incision sites is a common part of the recovery process and may last up to two weeks. Do not rub or scratch the eyelids until they are completely healed.
Two Weeks After
Undissolvable stitches will have been removed, and you may be cleared to resume your normal activities, including a return to work. However, continue to avoid any strenuous activities and heavy lifting.
Discomfort and blurred vision should be nearly resolved by now, with some mild swelling, bruising, and eye fatigue remaining.
Four Weeks After
You can expect to see your final results as swelling and bruising should be almost non-existent now. Most patients have fully recovered by week five or six, with any remaining restrictions lifted.
