What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Posted August 08, 2019 in Gynecomastia

When men experience enlargement of the breast tissue, it is known as gynecomastia, which can appear during youth or develop as they age. Some males find their swollen breasts embarrassing, and they become self-conscious about their chest. These feelings can result in refusing to go shirtless when they go swimming, experiencing a reduced sex drive, and having low self-esteem.

Men who are dissatisfied with their breast appearance can surgically remove excess fatty tissue in their breasts by undergoing gynecomastia surgery to provide a chiseled, masculine chest. Restoring a flatter, more sculpted chest can significantly improve your self-image and comfort in taking off your shirt.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

The main factors that can contribute to the development of gynecomastia include hormonal imbalances, medications, extracurricular activities, the natural aging process, or health concerns such as a tumor. Symptoms of gynecomastia include swollen breast gland tissue, a firm or rubbery texture, and tender breasts.

Dr. Todd B. Koch can discuss your medical history and medications during your consultation to recommend an appropriate treatment for you. Each situation is different, so your surgical plan will be customized to fit your needs.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, then you should schedule an appointment with your primary physician immediately:

  • Nipple discharge
  • Pain
  • Severe breast sensitivity

Can Gynecomastia Heal Itself?

In some cases, swollen male breasts reduce as a boy gets older. This awkward transition phase can cause some discomfort but isn’t a serious health risk unless it involves another medical concern. Many men find their enlarged breasts bothersome and do not wish to continue having the issue. Insurance typically does not cover this surgery, so it depends on the extent of the problem and how willing the patient is to undergo a surgical procedure.

Gynecomastia Surgery

The surgical procedure designed to address gynecomastia that does not resolve itself is similar to a breast reduction. Direct excision of glandular tissue is performed. Fat is removed from the breasts to provide a more muscular, defined chest contour. Liposuction is sometimes used to gently suction the fat from the breasts through small incisions. A cannula (thin suctioning device) is used to remove the fatty tissue. A compression garment is applied to promote healing, reduce swelling, minimize bruising, and support the breasts while you heal.

Who Can Benefit From Gynecomastia Surgery?

Ideal candidates for this procedure are healthy men who have realistic expectations for their outcome and are at a stable weight. If you identify with these criteria and are bothered by your enlarged breast size, then gynecomastia surgery may be right for you. Dr. Koch can examine your chest and provide further details during your consultation.
