Will an At-Home Derma Roller Give Me the Same Results as Microneedling?

Posted October 04, 2021 in Microneedling

3 Minute Read:

Microneedling is a non-surgical procedure meant to rejuvenate skin and help achieve a healthier, glowing complexion. An analysis of microneedling studies and research found that microneedling offers potential therapeutic and cosmetic benefits.

A derma roller is a device meant to mimic microneedling that many people use at home.

Because these two tools are similar, some people may wonder if they can skip microneedling and use a derma roller for the same results.

Well, you may want to think twice.

How Does Microneedling Work?

During a microneedling procedure, a trained professional uses a device with tiny needles to create micro-channels in the skin. These tiny openings prompt the immune system and the skin’s natural healing mechanisms to encourage cell proliferation and increase collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin are proteins responsible for skin strength and elasticity.

How Does My Skin Benefit From Microneedling?

Microneedling can improve skin tone and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists can customize microneedling to treat localized areas and inject medications to address skin care issues such as scars, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.

INNOpen™ is a type of microneedling that uses serums to enhance results and target specific conditions, such as acne or inflammation.

What Does a Derma Roller Do?

A derma roller looks like a small paint roller covered in tiny needles. You gently roll it over your skin in different directions. The tiny channels created by the needles help skin care serums penetrate your skin.

Will I Get the Same Results Between a Derma Roller and a Microneedling Treatment?

A derma roller can’t produce the same results as microneedling. Rollers aren’t as precise as derma pens used for microneedling, so localized treatment isn’t possible.

Even though derma rollers are small devices, it is very difficult to reach tiny nooks and crannies around facial features. An esthetician or physician can adjust micro pens to penetrate the skin up to 2.5 mm. Derma rollers usually penetrate only 1 to 1.5 mm deep.

Trained medical experts, such as plastic surgeons and dermatologists, have extensive knowledge of skin health and medicine. They use many different skin care serums and medications for each client’s individual needs. People using derma rollers at home don’t have access to the same products, nor do they have the education and experience to choose the correct products for specific issues.

Are Microneedling and Derma Rollers Safe?

Tiny holes in the skin’s surface can become infected if the needles aren’t sterile. Dermatologists follow strict protocols to ensure equipment and tools are sterile. INNOpen™ uses disposable needle cartridges, so new, sterile needles are used for each procedure.

A derma roller without proper sterilization could inject bacteria and other pathogens directly into the skin. This may lead to infection, swelling, inflammation, and scars.
