Am I a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Posted May 18, 2016 in Laser Hair Removal, Non-Surgical Treatments

Laser hair removalLaser Hair Removal for Armpit is a highly popular cosmetic procedure. All the same, this treatment may be more or less effective depending on the color of your hair and skin. Certain skin and hair colors are better suited for laser hair removal than others, which is why it is important to know whether or not you are a good candidate for this procedure.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal works by transmitting a laser beam into the hair follicles. The hair follicles conduct the energy to the hair bulb to destroy the blood vessels. Once these blood vessels have been destroyed, the hair can no longer grow. Detection of pigment is essential to the efficacy of the procedure, and as such, people with light skin and dark hair will see the best results.

Skin Color

Multiple types of lasers have been developed to make laser hair removal possible for all skin colors. Using the wrong type of laser on darker skin may cause the skin to absorb most of the laser energy, which could cause the skin to lighten. Using the correct type of laser should prevent this from happening; still, those with lighter skin are most likely to see the best results from laser hair removal. Individuals who are tanned or sunburned should not seek laser hair removal, as the treatment is best for those whose treatment areas match their natural skin color.

Hair Color

Because the detection of pigment is essential for laser hair removal, hair colors with less natural pigment are less responsive to the treatment. As examples, blonde hair, gray hair, white hair, and red hair often do not respond to laser hair removal treatment because they have limited pigmentation. If you have light skin and light hair, you may not be a good candidate for laser hair removal, as your skin may absorb the light rather than the hair. Ideal candidates have dark hair and light skin.
