Can Sleeping Positions Prematurely Age Your Face?

However, there is one thing that may save your face from premature lines, and that is sleeping on your back. Recent research has shown that some sleeping positions can prematurely age your face. If you are a stomach or side sleeper and you are beginning to notice facial wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic and facial fillers can help rejuvenate your appearance.

How Sleeping Positions May Cause Wrinkles

A new study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal indicates that sleeping on your stomach or side may cause facial wrinkles. If you sleep in these positions, compression, tension, and shear forces are applied to your face throughout the night. This distortion of the face can lead to wrinkles over time. Initially, these lines may be noticeable immediately upon waking and then disappear as the morning progresses. However, ultimately, the wrinkles will likely become permanent features on your face. Sleep wrinkles can be worsened over time because of decreased collagen and elasticity in the skin due to aging. Sleeping on your back can help minimize your risk of developing permanent sleep wrinkles.

Non-Surgical Treatments for Facial Wrinkles

Facial wrinkles, whether caused by sleeping positions, aging, sun exposure, smoking, or other factors, can be treated without invasive surgery. BOTOX® Cosmetic and facial fillers are popular non-surgical treatments for facial wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to fill in areas of volume loss so that the skin fills out and deeper lines and folds become smooth again. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a neurotoxin that stops muscle contractions so that expression lines do not form. In most cases, sleep lines differ from expression lines and tend to be perpendicular to expression lines. Therefore, because BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to stop muscle contractions, it is more effective in treating expression lines and sleep lines that coincide with expression lines. For sleep wrinkles that are perpendicular to expression lines, dermal fillers or collagen injections may be a more appropriate treatment.
