As we age, our facial features undergo changes, such as loss of volume, loss of skin elasticity, sagging, and bone loss, just to name a few. The biggest factor that affects your appearance is the loss of collagen. Collagen is a compound that makes your skin firmer and increases the elasticity of your skin. As you age, collagen production slows, and this plays a critical role in the development of wrinkles and sagging skin. Sculptra® Aesthetic is a unique filler that stimulates your body to produce collagen and helps in turning back the hands of time.
What Is Sculptra® Aesthetic?
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable. The key compound in Sculptra® Aesthetic is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) hydrogel, which belongs to the aliphatic polyesters and lactic acid synthesized from corn. These microparticles are scientifically combined with carboxymethylcellulose (cellulose polymer) and non-pyrogenic (non-heat generating) mannitol (sugar alcohol) to make a freeze-dried, crystallized substance which is mixed with sterile water and a local anesthetic before injection.
How Sculptra® Aesthetic Works
Unlike many dermal fillers, Sculptra® Aesthetic’s effects take a longer time to appear because the aim of the procedure is to stimulate the natural collagen production in the body. During the session, this dermal filler is injected into the specific sites that show wrinkles or skin depressions. After the injection, the chemical compounds present in Sculptra® Aesthetic are slowly absorbed into the body and begin to stimulate collagen formation around the injection site, thus causing the lower skin layers to repair themselves. It’s important to remember that, unlike many other wrinkle fillers, the Sculptra® Aesthetic product gradually improves the affected area. The entire process can actually take four to six weeks. Generally, anywhere from three to four treatments are required to achieve the desired results. The improvements may last two to three years.
This is a simple in-office procedure. The whole process takes around 15 minutes. The facial skin is cleansed. The treatment areas are marked. Ice is applied before and after treatment. Injections are performed in the designated areas. The local anesthetic makes the treatment almost painless. Immediately, your facial features will be improved. However, the results will be fleeting once all the excess sterile water has been absorbed within a day or two. You will experience temporary soreness. After the treatment, it is best to return to the comfort of your home and apply ice. You may resume all normal activities the following day. Post-treatment massaging is critical. This will disperse the PLLA particles evenly within the treated area. Massaging follows the rule of fives: it needs to be performed fives times a day for five minutes for five days.
